The Hinge Holds

Season edition No. 9. The two pre-stated stress-test games came in as a split, the desk's own rule said hold — and the analyst had to be held to it. Plus: one observable confirmed, one refuted, and the instrument that replaces it.

THE CARD

Call Our number Record Status
Rams under 11.5 wins 67.2 → 69.7 (hinge held; +2.5 on new evidence only) LAR 2–3 on schedule — from 2–3, the over needs 10–2

The stress test, graded: W 24–20 at Philadelphia (Sunday, Oct 4) · L 37–34 in overtime vs Buffalo (Monday, Oct 12). A split. The pre-stated rule for a split was "exactly on schedule at 67.2," and it held. Next: Arizona Sunday, Oct 18 · at Las Vegas Sunday, Oct 25 — both without the starting left tackle.

One observable confirmed, one refuted

The desk pre-registered two instruments for these games. Stafford's attempt count fired twice — 51 at Philadelphia, 54 against Buffalo. The first was the thesis in full: two interceptions, a 63.9 rating, a win rescued by Kyren Williams running the ball in the fourth quarter. The second is harder to call duress — 40-of-54 for 383, three touchdowns, a 111.9 rating, in a game Los Angeles possessed for nearly 38 minutes. Riccardo's reading stands on the record as his: a 38-year-old quarterback throwing 54 times is "a distress flare" regardless of the rating, because the volume is required to tread water while the defense bleeds. The instrument measured exertion, and the exertion is real.

The third-down observable was refuted, and the desk says so plainly. Riccardo wrote that this defense would be toothless on third down without Myles Garrett; Philadelphia converted zero of twelve and Buffalo two of seven. "I measured the roof and ignored the foundation," in his words — Buffalo never needed third down, because it ran 37 times for 234 yards at 6.3 a carry. The failure mode was first and second down. So the instrument is replaced with one that has a denominator: the share of opponents' first-and-10 rushes that gain four or more yards, floor of 15 qualifying attempts per game, bar at 55%. The editor ran it from the play-by-play before it was adopted: Buffalo 12 of 18, 67%; Philadelphia 8 of 15, 53%. It would have fired on one of the two games. Pre-committed steps: fires against Arizona or Las Vegas, +3.0; fires against both, +6.5. A second proposed instrument — time to pressure under 2.5 seconds — is void before it starts, because it cannot be measured on public data. The desk learned that one in August.

The number moved once, for the right reasons, after moving twice for the wrong ones

The split arrived and Riccardo moved to 84.5, announcing he would not "negotiate with his own past statements when new math enters the room." The editor's challenge was a single point: the new math — a 10–2 finish now required from 2–3 — was the hinge's own content, computable on September 28 when he wrote "a split holds 67.2." This desk honored a PCE bar it hated and a tripwire that killed a winning call. It does not override a hinge it happens to like. The steelman round had then trimmed him to 74.3 on the soft schedule and Nacua's return, both already in his file — the fourth documented time this analyst has repriced on the sound of the opposing brief. His own words closing it: "I was simulating a debate rather than calculating a price." Both numbers are erased. 67.2 stands on the game outcomes.

What is new and outside the hinge gets priced, bounded: Alaric Jackson, the starting left tackle, is suspended two games for punching Buffalo's Bradley Chubb after Monday's game — exactly the Arizona and Las Vegas games. Step +2.1, and it expires before November. The Rams also released their kicker after the overtime miscues and signed Blake Grupe off the Jets; a new snap-hold-kick operation in high-leverage moments is worth +0.4. Final: 69.7. Garrett is "making good progress" with no return timeline, which is what 67.2 already assumed.

Arizona and Las Vegas, pre-committed

Two games, one instrument, no discretion left on the desk. The first-and-10 run observable grades each game from the play-by-play, with the steps above. Jackson's absence is already priced and will not be re-priced when a pressure shows up on the broadcast. The arithmetic is restated here so no one can re-discover it in two weeks: at 2–3 the over needs ten wins in twelve, an .833 pace from a team whose last two losses were coin flips — by four at Denver, by three in overtime at home. No book currently lists a Rams win total, so the card still grades on games and nothing else. Next grade after Las Vegas. Twelve games remain.
