Eight and One

Season edition No. 11. The Rams won at Las Vegas and beat the Chargers, the pre-committed instrument could not fire because the Raiders ran seven first-down plays against a floor of fifteen, and the under moves from 95.9 to 89.6 — down, on wins, because that is what the named convention does. The quarterback left the building with ice on his elbow, and the card pre-computes that too.

THE CARD

Call Our number Record Status
Rams under 11.5 wins 95.9 → 89.6 (87.9 on the arithmetic at the named .65 per game; +1.65 net in carried steps; 89.55 unrounded) LAR 4–4 from 4–4, the over needs 8–1

The grades: W 35–21 at Las Vegas (Sunday, Oct 25); W 24–9 vs the Chargers (Sunday, Nov 1). The instrument: Las Vegas ran seven first-and-10 plays against a floor of fifteen — it could not read, and its window is closed. Next: at Washington, Sunday, Nov 8, 1:00pm ET — pre-computed: a win puts the number at 84.8, a loss at 98.5 and the card into maintenance. If Stafford is inactive Sunday, add 5.5 (gates: Wednesday's report, then the 11:30am ET inactives).

Two wins, and the arithmetic moves the other way

The Rams won at Las Vegas 35–21 on Sunday, Oct 25 and beat the Chargers 24–9 on Sunday, Nov 1, their first back-to-back wins of the season, and are 4–4. From 4–4 with nine games left the over needs 8–1. In Las Vegas they led 28–6 at the half; Stafford completed 23 of 29 for 195 yards and three touchdowns, all before the break, the third of them his 155th as a Ram, one past Roman Gabriel; the Rams ran 38 times for 199 yards, were five for five in the red zone and held the ball for 34:14; the Raiders ran 17 times for 48 and threw 44 passes. Against the Chargers the offense did not make a first down on its first five possessions, the first time that has happened under McVay, and trailed 9–3 before a 40-yard completion to Atwell started a touchdown drive that ended with 19 seconds left in the half; Corum's 23-yard run opened the third quarter, Nacua's 18-yard screen followed McDuffie's interception, and the defense allowed nine points and took the ball away twice. McManus is nine for nine since he signed. Stafford threw 29 and 25 passes; the attempt observable did not fire.

The instrument could not fire, and its window is closed. The pre-committed reading — the Raiders' first-and-10 rushes gaining four or more yards, floor fifteen attempts, bar 55% — found seven attempts, three of them for four or more, 43%. Seven is below the floor, so no reading was possible; the strictest count (six attempts, 50%) and the loosest (all 17 carries, 24%) agree, and three independent play-by-play sources agree with each other. The +3.0 step that was live for Las Vegas is dead by expiry; the +6.5 died in Arizona. The Chargers, for the record only, ran eleven first-and-10 plays and gained four on four of them.

The convention, the steps, and a bag of ice

Three weeks ago the desk set this number by one stated model — a flat .65 chance per game run through the required finish — and struck the table that disagreed with it, so that nothing on the page could imply a second number. The model is applied to a 4–4 record the same way it was applied to 2–4. Ten of eleven at .65 was a 6.1% event and the under 93.9; eight of nine is a 12.1% event and the under is 87.9. The number falls because the Rams won, and the convention does not get revisited because the direction is inconvenient. Then the steps, re-dated. Davante Adams: +1.5, carried; McVay says his return will be "closer to the shorter term" of six to ten weeks after a hamstring cleanout, and Riccardo moves the expiry from Nov 25 to Nov 28, the size unchanged. Ford and Turner: +1.2, carried to Nov 15. Landman: his +0.2 expired after Las Vegas, as written; he was cleared and played. The kicker: McManus is nine for nine since he signed, so the +0.3 for a unit that did not exist, less the 0.15 for McManus's record, is retired to zero. The Jackson refund, −1.05, is permanent by the analyst's own word. That is 87.9 + 1.5 + 1.2 − 1.05 = 89.55, printed as 89.6. Two steps are written for later and priced at zero now. Garrett's 21-day practice window opens Wednesday, Nov 4 — "it's a real positive that we're starting his clock," McVay said, and declined to say more — and the step prices at activation, not at the opening of a window: with Garrett active, Riccardo assigns .655 per game to the final seven (Washington and Arizona stay at .65), the Poisson-binomial moves the base from 87.9 to 87.4, and the step is −0.5 on the day he is activated, carried to the end of the regular season (the analyst wrote −0.6; the arithmetic gives −0.5, and the arithmetic prints). And the quarterback. ESPN listed Stafford questionable with a right arm at 6:11pm ET Monday; the Orange County Register reported he left the locker room after Sunday's game with a large bag of ice around his right elbow, and McVay, asked about it, said: "He's had some soreness there. I think he'd be better equipped once you guys talk to him to answer that. I can't attest to something that I'm not necessarily aware of." No hit has been identified, no diagnosis offered, no practice status issued; he finished the game, and the first official report is Wednesday. The step is a conditional, derived from the same convention: Riccardo assigns the Washington game a .25 chance of a win with Bennett starting, the other eight stay at .65, and P(over) = .25 × .169 + .75 × .032 = 6.6%; the base becomes 93.4, the step is +5.5 for that game only, expiring at his return, and the number would read 95.1. If he plays, zero.

The steelman put the over's case at full strength — the fifth-best team in the league by FPI, a quarterback completing 79 percent, 199 and 129 rushing yards in consecutive weeks, nine points allowed without Garrett, Ford or Turner, a market midpoint that moved from 11.5¢ to 16.5¢ in ten days — and the number did not move, because none of it was new: the wins are in the arithmetic and the rest was stepped or declined a turn earlier. For the reader's sensitivity, and not for use: at .70 per game the number would read 82.1; at .60, 94.6. Asked whether he would choose .65 again knowing the record, Riccardo said he would "lock that exact same number in the ledger without hesitation." The market, such as it is: Polymarket's "more than 11.5 wins" showed 16.5¢ at 12:35am ET and 15.5¢ an hour later, on $952 of lifetime volume with an 8-to-10¢ bid and a 23¢ ask, so the 83.5 implied under is a midpoint on a book fifteen cents wide, not a price; "more than 10.5" is 31¢ and "more than 9.5" is 53.5¢ on $7,600. No sportsbook lists a Rams season total — Bovada carries the market for twenty-four teams and the Rams are not among them; DraftKings' last number on record is 9.5, via ESPN on Oct 20. ESPN's model rates the roster fifth in the league, projects 9.3 wins and a 43% chance of the playoffs, and ranks the remaining schedule the hardest in the NFL. The Super Bowl price is +1200 at Bovada and 7¢ on Polymarket, from +750 on Sept 28.

Washington, pre-computed

The Commanders are 2–4–1 and beat Philadelphia 27–10 on Sunday night with Daniels healthy; McLaurin and Newton are on injured reserve, Payne is out for the season and Kinlaw is out. ESPN's DraftKings feed has the Rams −5.5, opened −4.5, the total 47.5 from an open of 50.5, the money line −238 from −205; FPI has the Rams by six with 73%. The rules are written now. A win is 5–4 and seven of eight required, a 16.9% event at .65 — base 83.1, number 84.8 with the carried steps. A loss is 4–5 and eight of eight required, a 3.2% event — base 96.8, number 98.5, across the 98.0 line at which this card stops being repriced weekly and is graded at season's end. Stafford is gated twice: the Wednesday report, then the Sunday inactives at 11:30am ET; if he is inactive, the conditional above applies to the number for that game and expires at his return. Garrett's step prices on the day he is activated, not before, and carries to the end of the regular season. There is no instrument this week; the analyst declined to write one into a low-signal stretch to have one on the page, and the card runs on arithmetic alone through the bye. After Washington comes Arizona (3–5), then the bye, then Green Bay on Thanksgiving eve, Kansas City, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle on Christmas night, Tampa Bay and Seattle again — a combined 35–33–1, and one loss is all the over can afford. The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov 10; McVay's position, on Oct 28, was that "hopefully some of those trades will be guys getting back from injury that haven't played for us," and the Rams hold neither a 2027 first- nor third-round pick to say otherwise. Asked what could legitimately move the number down before Thanksgiving other than wins, Riccardo named nothing structural; on his own ledger the only candidates are Garrett's activation and Adams's return, and both are already written.
